Octopus Art
Octopuses have always stood out to me because of how different they are. The way they move is so fluid and constantly changing shapes, always aware of what’s around them. They’re incredibly smart, curious, and adaptable in a way that feels mysterious. Each one has its own personality.
When I paint them, I’m not just trying to capture what they look like, I’m trying to capture a feeling. I want each one to feel like an individual, with its own quiet presence and character, not just another sea creature.
That’s also why protecting the ocean is so important to me. These animals rely on such a delicate environment, and it’s easy to forget how complex and alive it really is. If my work can help someone slow down and really see these animals, even just a little differently, they might realize the ocean is worth protecting.
I’ve spent so many summers on Cape Cod, and the ocean has become such a big part of my life and my art. Each year, I donate a portion of my sales to help protect it.
These animals and the oceans are worth protecting.
Laura Bedard is a marine life watercolor artist inspired by the ocean and coastal life of Massachusetts. Her work focuses on watercolors of octopuses, sea turtles, seahorses, and whales, capturing their movement, personality, and connection to the sea.
Her paintings are influenced by the changing coastline of Cape Cod, where the water, light, and marine life shape her perspective. She is especially drawn to octopuses for their intelligence, individuality, and unique movement, often painting them as expressive, living beings rather than simple subjects. Through her work, Laura aims to create a deeper connection between people and the ocean. Her marine life artwork highlights the beauty and complexity of these animals while gently reminding us of the importance of protecting ocean environments.
Laura is the resident artist for Lost Horizons Cape Cod, where her work lives within luxury and historic vacation homes, and she has illustrated two children’s books. One created to gently raise awareness about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD).
